I think at one point or another we've all gone through the process of thinking the way you do CC. And there isn't anything wrong with believing what you want to in spite of any facts presented. I like that in you. It forces us to think or rethink our positions and it either brings out the best in us or in some cases the worst, hopefully NOT and decidedly the latter. It is the pursuit of the truth we all seek and in many an instance the we don't know aspect usually provides more than enough difference of belief for all to have a healthy discussion about. And I think Custer's character, in one way or another, might have played into his decisions that day so I can see where you are coming from.
Keep em coming CC. Somewhere in all of this the truth will out.

I'm pretty well aware of the facts TB(and I'm not going to let the facts get in the way of my opinion... oops did I say that?) and I've read the books. Custer was a fool that day ! No I don't think I need to evolve (thinking the way you do CC).The Custer stories have gone in cycles over the years depending which way and who is blowing the wind. After the LBH fiasco Custer was doubted by Grant,Sheridan,Reno Inquiry etc. ,later Custer is defended by Libbie , Whittaker etc. then Custers a fool again after Libbies death and now the latest, the few(TB) who try to find honor in this military man. Anyways it is fun. Take care. I don't think I will change my thoughts on Custer(I trust my crap detector) but again no one should ever say ever.

CC, you may be right. Maybe Custer was a fool that day and maybe he wasn't. My take is that no one person could possibly be responsible for all that happened that day. Custer was ordered to fight, he was not their on his own hook.
If you could just back up a bit and blame Sheridan, and Sherman, and the U.S. Government along with Custer I could understand your point a tad bit better.

I think your "crap detector" is influenced by by the fact that you have already made of your mind and do not wish to be confused by the facts General! For example, your list of "doubters" reads like a "Rouges Gallery." Grant - He wouldn't have been a little biased just because Custer's testimony helped to reveal a few of his "appointees" as the scoundrels they actually were;would he? While grant was an honorable man he simple was not a good judge of the character of others. Sheridan - As the creator of the asinine "plan" to trap highly mobile Indians by utilizing three lumbering commands who failed to maintain contacted with each other, he certainly wasn't trying to cover anything up, Oh No! Reno - The drunken sot who had no confidence in Custer and who led his men on a charge to "them dar hills" where many of them continued to run after arriving, who possessed a long record strange behavior and anti-social antics certainly told the truth at the inquiry, I'm sure. Libby had a long and enduring love for her husband and her warn memories are certainly understandable. I believe Custer's "luck" changed periodically because the need for a "hero" or the disdain for a "hero" changes periodically in any social arena. World War ll, for example, created "Captain America" while Vietnam promulgated a decrease in respect for all military personnel. Custer, the man, died as he lived, he was neither a scholar nor an idiot. What you are referring to is the enigma that created a larger than life phantom that never really was a physical being but merely a creation by all who are fascinated by the subject, either pro or con.

Thanks Blundering Bruin, but it is a post modern world,we shouldn't be so dichotomous like some we know here (no names),who think Custer is sliced bread and then gather there facts to make it fit(or should I say they try to ....how convieeeeeeeeeeeeeeent for them...yawn ...so cliche). BB,if we all think alike then there is no thinking at all .BB you don't believe "a single word" I said ! I will give you time to re-think that point.

One world all thinking alike and all in accord? Why that in association with a word that means a phase of the moon? Hmmm... I wonder about the division of each plant's branches here in your own statement that could be considered botany bay. Behind branch number one we have - "who think Custer is sliced bread and then gather there facts to make it fit(or should I say they try to" And behind the 2nd branch we have - "if we all think alike then there is no thinking at all .BB you don't believe "a single word" I said ! I will give you time to re-think that point." Dichotomous CC? Oh pleeeeaaaase, give us all a break will ya.

Must of struck a nerve ! I can expect the tag team soon ! When I was a little girl, my mother would place drops of Castor-oil in a table spoon of sugar to ease the pain of that terrible taste. Why don't you add a little "sugar" to you tirades against General Custer. It may help the other posters to understand you!
