The life of a cavalryman in the frontier appeared to have been a long and continuous span of excruciating boredom followed by brief moments of death and horror. Recreational drinking was the preferred method of dealing with the former and, the best way of alleviating the agony of the latter.
A seventh cavalryman of the 1888 to 1891 period characterized the men in his company as, " good fighters, but mostly heavy drinkers."
In the Indian wars, a man's "bunky" was his best friend. On campaigns soldiers generally carried only one blanker apiece. In the high plains this was not sufficient cover so men pooled their blankets and slept together for warmth.
Often officers would overlook or condone bullying of subordinates by their sergeants. The long services and backgrounds of the sergeant did not help in softening their attitudes towards discipline which made it particularly hard for the unproven, raw recruit.

This is a good picture of my favorite Irishman in the 7th. Study on it , and see where this is a very telling picture about Myles.... Attachments:

Am I the only one who thinks that Boston looks rather freakishly tall? Really, am I the only one who sees this? Look to the man directly beside Custer and tell me if that couldn't rival Wallace in stature, that Boston Custer is one of the most long armed bastards I have ever seen.

I always wondered just how tall Long Soldier was. Are you sure that's Boston, (the guy looking down at Myles after he snatched the ladies fan)? I always zeroed in on Long Soldier's size, but yeah, if that's Boston, he has the arms of an orangutan. Here's an interesting site that has a good pic of Long Soldier, as well as others... www.firstpeople.us/

The man that stands out like an orangutan who has consumed xanax is the Indians who towers above everyone else. Where did he come from? Holy mackerel!!!

I always zeroed in on Long Soldier's size, but yeah, if that's Boston, he has the arms of an orangutan. There's practically two feet between his armpit and his elbow alone! There are other pictures of Boston that are just like this one, and I've seen him billed here also. I've been asking for physical stats for quite some time and no one seems to ever want to discuss Boston at all, let alone his height. I'll see if I can dig for the other Boston pictures. And to Wiggs, The Indian was billed as a carnival attraction of sorts.

Here's a picture of Boston sitting next to Jimmy Calhoun, you can compare the faces and notice the similarity in the cheekbones and jaw, yet minus the sideburns. There's another picture where Boston's body is more visible also and I'll want to get my hands on it. I should also find the books where your picture is billed as Boston. Attachments:

I always felt that picture was reversed because Custer's hat brim is turned up on the left side. He was right handed, and so I would think he shouldered a rifle on his right side as well. Boston's mutton chops thru me off, yeah, that's ol' Boston in the other pic. Not that many pics of him out there.

I remember the pic where they were in Custer's Ft. Lincoln home, Custer standing by the piano and Boston sitting in a chair by the window. In that pic he looks average. Googled the hell out of Boston to get data of his person, no joy. Did find out that Autie Reed's scalp ended up in Wichita, KS.

Note, mind you, Boston is tilted back and sitting in the background, hence it makes his arms and body look a lot more normal sized. Certainly, of coarse, this again confirms his sideburns! The chops alone and the height made me think of Wallace in that one photo before I was corrected to hear that it was Boston.

That's a good point, Boston is at an angle.

Me too. Myles snatched away the fan from her while she was fanning herself, when the Photographer said "stay still." She looks put out, arms crossed, knees pulled away, Boston looking down at the action, and Myles being cool and still, with the "that's it" look. Great picture that comes alive from the past.......

Cutter....Here's a similar photo with Boston sitting up, note... the orangutan arms return.... though they are still not as blatant as they were in the other picture. And why do I have this? Because I have spent nearly three years downloading, uploading, deleting and arranging various images to my computer files. And in all the time I've wasted on the internet, it at least comes in handy on days like these! Strange Attachments:
