I have just experienced a belated after thought that I would like to share with the board. Admittedly, a substantial portion of the despicable atrocities exchanged between the whites and the aboriginals could not be avoided. Whenever one group deprives another group of their fundamental way of life, hatred and animosity is created. When perceived and actual vile acts of aggression are continued to be thrust upon the weaker group by the strong, a feeling of hopelessness and anger permeates the very souls of the oppressed. The weaker group is thus reduced to a catatonic state of hopelessness and Godlessness. My question is this? Why did the U.S. have to take everything away from the Native Americans. The Black Hills were their sovereign right of residence for eternity until gold was discovered. Reservations that consisted of land that no other people on the earth wanted or desired were not, obviously, the answer. We could have done so much more.

We sure could have done more. We didn't because politicians of that day were a whole lot like they are now, greedy! Once greed kicks in human rights and morality go right out the door. You're talking about how much we could have done but didn't when the Indians were forced to live on reservations, accept hand outs which were late or didn't come and nobody cared. Those who did care were not enough to turn the tide.
Look back on history and see other people who suffered things worse than the Indians, like the Holocaust for example! Men will continue to be greedy, selfish, and uncaring until the Second coming of Our Lord, Jesus Christ!

When we think of the long and disgusting record of "Man's Inhumanity to Man" on this planet I just don't see any real hope for us.

Sadly, you are perhaps right. As long as our political leaders, now as then, are corrupt what is best for the people will come second;always!

Dr. Strange I stand corrected by your though provoking post. That the Indians were going to be conquered and subdued by the U.S. government is unquestionable. That they would accomplish this objective the way they did is the only way they could have.
This does nothing to make the act less despicable;it simply is what it is. A damn shame!
