I believe that you have, eloquently, ascertained why this relatively inconsequential battle has mesmerized so many for such a long period of time. We are fascinated with the cast of characters who comprise this tapestry of incredible human actions, both "white" and "Indian."\
The audience is supplied with everything that makes a topic reek of exhilarating interest. Hero's, villians, glory, death, right and wrong. Each character reflects our own (the audience) biases, hopes, and dreams. We have but to choose the character that best exemplifies our personal beliefs and then denigrate the other participants as corruptible minions of evil.
There can be no final answer, merely conjecture that leads to positive possibilities;the mother of truth. No one knows what really happened. We can only rally against those who disagree with us and praise those who agree. When we make a stand based upon honesty we can not do otherwise.
The true salvation that leads to "truth" is to be open minded and polite, steadfast and reasonable, polite and gracious. In such an arena truth is given the opportunity to grow while ignorance is rightfully shunned.
I agree wholeheartedly with you when you state that the true purpose of understanding is not to "fix blame nor to absolve any man", it is to find the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
