The Bannocks were a part of the Shoshones nation, and their original language was Shoshones, but they spoke a dialect of their own. They were called, "Root Diggers"because a large portion of their food consisted of roots, particularly wild potatoes.
They believed their ancestors came from coyotes or prarie wolves and, as a result, worshipped the animal. When eating, a good portion of their food is given to the wolves as an offering to the spirits of their forefathers.
They were about the only Indian who did not understand and utilize "Sign Language." They were not very well thought of by any other Indian nor white man. One of the greatest insults that could be thrown at anyone except a Digger was to be called a Digger Indian. They lived in the northeastern part of what is now the State of Nevada.
