It's incredible, to me, the extent of physical punishment meted out to soldiers for the slightest infractions. Capricious and malicious misuse of punishment destroyed morale among the troopers.
Example: "...summer of 69 Gen. Custer had in use a hole deeply dug in the ground about 30 x 30 feet, by a bout 15 ft. deep, entrance by ladder, hole boarded over: this was the guard house, and a man even absent from from a call was let down. [There were so many of them] I don't know how the prisoners laid down.
Secretary of War, Stephen B. Elkins, reported that one third of the men recruited between 1867 and 1891 had deserted. This number of deserters would include the "snow-birds" that enlisted for the winter only to take "flight" during the Spring for the nearest gold mine.

" Summer of 69 " was an up tempo rock song, about love-making, released by singer Bryan Adams(Crazycanuck) in 1985. Custer, with the original " summer of 69 " where " prisoners laid down " , had to keep order , and not to worry, as many of these recruits probably been treated worse in there pre-army lives. Just ask Rooster Cogburn, people expected cruelty, and if they didn't get it, they considered you weak. And Custer couldn't have that. I quess they could always shoot you for deserting or something.

I see your point. I guess we're all lucky to not have been born a part of that generation and in the military. On second thought, with the proliferation of nuclear arms and man's inhumanity to man perhaps we are not so luck after all.

Crazycanuck done made a good point. Everybody in that picture lived in a world of violence and to be seen as weak could mean an exit stage left whether you wanted one or not!

"Heavens to Murgatroid", Whitebull using the term, "exit stage left", I'm going to start calling you "Snagglepuss" as it looks like you are a fan of that pink panther that appeared on Quick Draw McGraw and Yogi Bear cartoons. And no you can't call me BooBoo,it makes me look weak.
