One of my personal favorite speeches was that given by Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address. And if one peruses through the pages here, I am quite sure, I have quoted either the whole text or a part of it. In that speech Lincoln mentions the word honor. And it got me to thinking what do people think it is today. So, I went to the wiki site to find out, that should really tell the whole story in a nutshell. I was shocked at the responses there and in fact appalled at some, if not all of it. And I must not be the only one as the people who manage the site evidently feel that what has been written there, somehow, isn't quite right.
I must say that no one who wrote anything in that article must have consulted a common dictionary to find out what that word even means.
1 Personal integrity
A) strong moral character or strength
B) adherence to ethical principals
2 Respect
3. Dignity - personal dignity that can lead to recognition and glory
4. Reputation - somebody's good name or good reputation
5. Source of pride: somebody or something that brings respect or glory
6. mark of distinction: something, e.g. a gift, award,
7. great privilege: a special privilege that is cherished
When the last 6 are judged alone, they mean nothing without the first. Someone may hold a high opinion (as in Reputation #4, Source of Pride #5 etc) of themselves and seek respect (#2), but without Personal Integrity (#1) it means nothing.
PS: THE MEANING OF HUSSAR IS...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hussar
You will notice that this term has never ever been used in the United States of America, nor has its cavalry ever been known as such a unit, that's because we never had one, not one unit that was organized on the basis of that European organization, AND we still don't, it's still called "Cavalry".
