OF MICE AND MEN:
If you are wanting to see violence and sex, and/or spectacular modern day visual special effects, or the mucho macho sex machine (par deux) in action, move on, this movie just isn't your cup of tea. However, if you are wanting a good movie where courage and romance flourish, this is it. John Steinbeck, who wrote the novel upon which the movie is based, decades ago captured the rare essence of humanities raw sense of human nature, and this version of the movie translates that essence perfectly. It is a faithful portrayal of Steinbeck's novel. It captures life's tragic and uplifting story of loyalty, the kind of human bonding that has, can and will forever grow between men. The kind that is often reluctant to acknowledge, much less portray without perversion, yet it still isn't what most would expect. Gary Sinise (George) is Lenny's (John Malkovich) protector and friend. Malkovich breaths life into the dim-witted & tender-hearted Lenny who is clearly not up to the task of dealing with a confusing, baffleing and moreover cruel world by heartless and uncaring people.
Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian- =Uncle Martin= tv series) plays the aged, gentle and kind hearted ranch hand, Candy who has a trusy old sheep dog as a very close companion. There is a spoiler here, for those who haven't seen the movie, but it is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the film, one that most of us can easily identify with.
The sorrows of life as well as its rewards are portrayed in a broad spectrum true to life's experience, whether it is making money to fulfill a dream, the challenges presented when life throws multiple obstacles in your path to success, or the softer cuddlier things in life that comforts. All that makes life worth living, not just for oneself, but for others in their lives that are unexpected. As with anything this good it has to include it all, drama, adventure and yes, even humor, and it does.
Sinise, Malkovich, Walston & Fenn give great performances along with the rest of the cast, from their acting to the script, their stars shine in a timeless classic, it is impossible not to like it. It is a simple human story, with real life issues as timeless as human nature can possibly be.
