www.1861ring.com/If one looks tight, the ring shown here could be the same. And this, Point being, if he wore his WP class ring on his right small finger, "His right little finger had been cut off, probably to obtain his West Point class ring." Then this pic: And this one: are reversed. It just never made sence to me why he would have the left side of his hat brim turned up when he was right handed, shown by looking at this pic: I know this is not reversed because the portraits on the wall are facing correctly.

Only one suggestion: your evidence appears to me to be solid in that Custer's ring was obviously wore on the "left" pinky, not the right. Is it possible that during the trauma, psychological stress, and disagreeable smells and sights of the death scenes that someone simply erred in his recollection of the missing digit?

Yup, I'm having my doubts about left vs right pinky. www.worthpoint.com/auctionhsad/show/36955This photo was signed by GAC. However, unless he shouldered his rifle on his left side, which is unlikely, why did he turn up the left brim of his hat? I would think that would be too "foppish" to use a term from Libby. Still on the hunt.

It kind of blows the mind when you read about some of the witnesses' statements. Windolph wrote to Camp that Custer was entirely dressed when his body was found. He even underlined part of his statement to emphasize it. Yet, many other witnesses claimed otherwise!

Up until now, this was the only pic that made sense. The blow up--- The hat was right, the ring was right. I have found that there's not a lot of reference points, (ie. numbers, letters etc.) in most of the photographs, they could easily go one way or another. The pic that started the pondering. Then I see how Dr. Lord is wearing his hat, am wondering if GAC was being funny and put his hat on backwards, and struck a serious pose. That would be in keeping with his sense of humor. Just spit balling here. After looking at Lt. Algernon Smith looking at GAC and Dr. Lord, I can't help but detect a smile.

Lieutenant Edward Godfrey
"Custer was mounted on his sorrel horse and it being a very hot day he was in his shirt sleeves; his buckskin pants tucked into his boots; his buckskin shirt fastened to the rear of his saddle; and a broad brimmed cream colored hat on his head, the brim of which was turned up on the right side and fastened by a small hook and eye to its crown. This gave him opportunity to sight his rifle while riding.---"
Well, I guess in a non combat situation, he turned the left side of his brim up, and in a combat situation, the right. That or he's messing with me from beyond the grave. I have found it's the little things that tell the most, but alas, not this time...

I can't recall which source, but I do remember reading that Kate Big Head stated that she witnessed two Cheyenne woman who recognized Custer's body on the battlefield. They allegedly punctured Custer's ears to help him to hear in the afterlife. While doing so, a warrior approached Custer's body with the apparent intent to despoil it. However, the two Cheyenne women "signed" to the Sioux warrior that "this man was a relative." The warrior acquiesced and merely removed Custer's pinkie finger only. Needless to say, it was probably the left pinkie that contained Custer's class ring that was removed and has never, to my knowledge, been recovered!

PPS
Good work about the ring. I've drawn Custer's hands before and I always thought it was a scrape or a callous or something.

Thanks Sir Strange. Hope all is good with you. Well, currently I shaved my head to give my follicles a fresh start. I'm gonna see if this fixes the problem I had where the hair always stays the same length on the top of my head. Either that or maybe it'll grow back with more missing It is at least a lesson in humbility and I hope I become a better man for it. I kept the beard, so currently I'm looking like Ivan Koloff for the next few weeks. Strange
