I hear tell that the illustrious Mr. Dark Cloud on the "other" board has often ridiculed the perspective that Benteen could not have ever responded to his order, "Benteen, Be Quick" as there was no way possible for him to know the whereabouts of Custer. apparently, unaware of the raging fire of 1984 that ravaged the land that constitutes the battle field and only now is the area beginning to resume its natural state. During the time of this battle, the foliage was green and deep, the grass was tall and the trail of a command of 200 men and mounts were as easy to follow as a modern day neon sigh. In addition, Mr. Dark cloud seemed to be unaware that Benteen had been following Custer's trail every since the separation and followed it to the very hill were Reno embedded himself minutes after Reno himself arrived. I make mention of the nefarious Dark Cloud only because I find it amazing that such an intelligent man has no idea about the battle yet insist upon appearing to be an expert in the field. ironically, he is known for ridiculing anyone who presents a theory that does not match up with his own. There are many antidotes regarding this individual that are available. I only wish that he would leave his world of safety and admiration and visit this forum and match knowledge with us. it would be quite amusing.

Dark Cloud is not intelligent by any stretch of the imagination. I'm gonna make that my last comment in regard to that board.

There has been a certain amount of ignorance bandied about both of them, both are equal in that ignorance and both share in its folly. I am quite confident when I state that there are those who seriously need psychological help when taking a subject like this and making it into something more than personal. And I likewise will make that my last comment in that regard to any of those boards.

I hear tell...that Tom could have been "The Better Brother" or so says it in a book written by Roy Bird. It seems that a drinking problem was the one thing that held him back. No matter what you believe, it's a good book to read. I recommend it.

In reference to DC, I always get a smirk when I read his stuff. Lots of keyboard karate.

That's exactly why I admire your character! You see the humor in all things and I only wish that I were more like you!

The following individuals did more (combined) to establish the current and prevalent theory of responsibility on General Custer regarding the historical "why" of his defeat than any other individuals or theorists;in my lowly opinion of course. As a result, facts pertinent to the unfolding of the battle as it may have truly occurred were altered, camouflaged, and submerged under a snare of false innuendo every since. let us examine the ultimate fate of these three individuals: George Wallace - Quickly made Captain in an era when going from Lieutenant to Captain could easily take ten tears or more;shot in the head at Wounded Knee. Marcus Reno - Eventually discharged under gross humiliating circumstances, which was followed by divorce from his second marriage;succumbed to cancer of the tongue. Frederick Benteen - Became a "Major" over an all Black contingency of soldiers whom, he earlier in his career, could not "respect", drank himself into a Court Martial, soon after retired and died hating Custer. I don't envy any of them.

Great references! I can not help but wonder why he and his wife separated after only being together a few months? I suspect alcohol! Reno himself admitted to having a drinking problem which is something extremely difficult to hide from a spouse.
Perhaps she became privy to one of Reno's alcoholic frenzy's and decided to cur trout and get out before being dragged to far into the relationship.
The more I discover about this poor man's sad and pathetic life the deeper my sympathy becomes.

Oh Joe, I think we all share in that, we just don't always allow ourselves the time to let our hair down. Here is one of my favorite songs sung by a young lady at the time whose recordings flew off the charts. This song as well as another "where waters flow" sung by her are among my all time favorites. In this version keep your eye upon the guys satchel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ2cjKj8MMc&feature=related

I hear tell that millions of Texans went bonkers and responded with rancor and venom when they heard Gen. Sheridan sprouted: "If I owned both Texas and Hell, I'd rent out Texas and live in Hell." As a relocated Oklahoman, I concur with that tidbit of wisdom!
