I figured you did. Anyway, I got uber zip about that particular leave. This tends to make me think it was of a close to the vest, sensitive nature. Which leads me to believe it would cause embarrassment if made known.

Well Cutter, gonorrhea wasn't so bad at the times. More than half the cadets had got this illness. He was not different. I think instead it's just a matter of lost documents. There are at the NAtional Archives lot of lost documents on custer and some of that very period. Here the answer I received:
Dear Mr. ...,
Thank you for contacting CMH. Regrettably, I am unable to find a reason for Custer’s illness. All avenues that I have investigated report the cause of the illness to be unknown. It seems he had a lot of medical issues while attending West Point which was relatively close to the period he was put on leave. Please Regards,

Hello,
Your inquiry has been sent to the US Army Military History Institute. I've reviewed several published works , to include the writings of Elizabeth Custer for details about Custer Leave of Absence. No author/researcher provides specific details about the issues /condition Custer was dealing with at the time. Generally, he appears to have submitted a personal request for the Leave of Absence to recuperate. At the time no medical certification would have been required.
Our collections do not include any further particular documents that cite or are expected to provide any further details.
Thank you. Richard L. Baker, MA (MSgt, USAF ret.) Senior Technical Information Spec. GS-11 U.S. Army Military History Institute

yes in fact. More than that, right now I am searching for some reference in some private letter...who knows, maybe I'm going to find gold in the Black Hills
