Someone can help me to find the reason why Custer was sick and had a leave of absence from October 1861 to February 1862? Thank you!

All I've found is he had an "illness" and accourding to him, almost died. I'm no expert on gonorrhea, but maybe his flaired up again.

This is what I knew too. I'm crashing my head to find out what sickness he've got, for my book, so, if you find somethiing else or if you know where I could ask, just let me know. Thank you friend!

A friend of mine said it is documented that GAC had a knee injury while at West Point. There is precious little about his medical history. I wondered also why Boston didn't get in to the military because of his health has anything to do with it?

where did he get this information? I already contacted West Point, the center of military history and the Military history Institute. When I'll get the answer, if I do get it, I will post here the results.

He got the knee injury info from Dr. Frost's "General Custer's Libbie", and "Custer Legends", same author.

Thank you, however this is 1859 and we're not sure if it was a coming back of the same illness. It would be useful to look on the Army archives. I guess there will be no more privacy barriers today for somebody dead in 1876.

Still nosing around. I did read that Gac didn't talk about a few things concerning his medical history, (gonorrhea?). He did have his share of upper respiratory problems when younger, flu, diarrhea, etc, but later on he seems to be in pretty good health.

I know that Cutter, but some author claims it was before. That's the reason why I said I must to verify the sources.
