Enhance the picture you get. You find that the character could easily be a photo of a black man. The short thick beard, the squat nose. I read somewhere that this might be Dorman, but not conclusive. "In September 1871, he served as a guide and interpreter for a party of engineers making the Northern Pacific Railroad Survey. He may have accompanied the 7th Cavalry on the 1874 Black Hills Expedition; there are references[citation needed] to Custer's servant 'Isa', which may have been him mistaken by people who didn't know who he was." Interesting stuff. Attachments:

The problem here is that IF this is a blackman, it would be a rather light skinned one. Dorman is supposed to be black Black, not a mocoa as (Chris Rock would say).
Its tough to figure this one, I'd really want to have a picture of him but I'm not quite feeling it.

The Dorman figure has a face that is resting under a shadow and if it were truly a black man here, I think he'd be be pitch black. His hand also looks kinda white. If we brought in Festus from Gunsmoke he might photograph just the same as the Dorman figure we have here.
And the guy marked with the number 3 might be an Indian himself for all we know Also, Bloody Knife is light colored because he's facing directly at the sun and has no hat to shadow his face..

Yup, via Facebook works good. Seems to me conjecture is equal on both sides. Anyone have records on Fort Rice in the time in question?

Up date, the fort Abraham Lincoln foundation wrote that that it is indeed. Dorman in the pic. Volume 14, number 1 of their newsletter, " The Past Times". The hunt continues. ;D

Looks like "3" might be McIntosh. Sure does look like him on some study.
