I ran across this not long ago. Several well renown battle philosophers Henry Weibert, Tom Bookwalter and Don Horn were down by the timber area of Reno's valley fight poking around when Henry pointed to a rather large bush that seemed to be visible on the bluffs close to the point where it was thought Custer was observed by those in the valley. A little time later, after they went up to the bluffs they found out that - that large bush they thought was very close to where Custer was observed from the valley, you know, right there along the edge of those bluffs, was instead not there, but instead was on top of Sharpshooter Ridge. Henry knew it when he pointed that out to Don and Tom from the valley. Like I said before, the man was very adept at what was possible and what wasn't in that area, and this georaphic anomoly proved a point he was trying to make. Whoever it was that might have been observed there might not have been right at the edge of those bluffs peering over, but instead further back and up higher on a hill higher behind it, giving the false impression of the place it was observed.
When I was there a few years ago I witnessed this same anomoly only it wasn't there where Henry's was. I was looking at those bluffs just southeast of ford "B" and it looked like there was a horse standing on top of the ridge not far down towards ford "b" from those twin peaks - those two peaks right by the road when one passes going towards Weir Peak, this alongside the road and not long after you start ascending from MtC. This observation took place from about where the east - west access service road from the Interstate dead ends into the Museum and gift shop service road that runs south to north. I had gotten out and stopped to take some photos of and from this area and I could swear that horse was right atop that ridgeline that ran just back of those bluffs near the river. When I got back in the car and drove went about a half mile or so north I could see that horse back on east ridge, it was the weirdest optical illusion I've ever seen. So yeah, who saw what where on that battlefield very easily might have been looking at something that wasn't where they thought it was, and, likely wasn't.
