The Apaches were a tribe of the Athabaska nation. They, along with the Commaches, were the reason that the southern portions of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona being closed to White settlers for quite sometime. On their raids they destroyed everything in their path. if their booty was more than they could carry away it was burned out of sheer meaness.
The warriors considered it beneath their dignity to do anything but hunt and fight. Their women were counted upon to perform all manners of labor, to include saddling the horses for the braves when about to go out on a battle or raid.
Any women found guilty of being unfaithful were exposed to a particularly disgusting and perverse form of punishment. Any infraction was punishable by cutting off the nose of the offending woman!!!
On December 27, 1872, Captain W. H. Brown, leading two companies of the Fifth Cavalry and thirty Apache scouts (
?), struck the Apaches with the single most crushing blow they received during their long struggle with the Army. Trapped in a Salt River Canyon cave, they fought a furious battle with their pursuers. Only a handful surrendered with over seventy-six fighting to the death.
