The religion of the Cheyennes was very similar to that of other nations of Indians, they believe in two Spirits-the Good and the Bad. They believed that there existed a happy hunting ground to which all spirits went to after death.
Their Sun Dance in honor of the Great Spirit resembled the Sun Dance of the Sioux. In fact, the Northern Cheyenne were extremely similar in habits and beliefs as the Sioux, particularly the Hunkpapa.
It was with the Southern Cheyenne that Kit Carson became famous. The Sante Fe' trail passed through a part of their hunting ground and created bitter feelings toward the "whites."
Actions such as these precipitated outbreak after outbreak that resulted in numerous deaths on both sides.
