I agree with you, to insist that the pack train took an hour and a 1/2 to get to the hill is silly. The confusion by the Indians may have come from a mix up between the arrival times of Benteen becoming confused with the latter time of the train. The Indians may have gotten the two separate incidents mixed up together.
I'm sorry for waiting so long to respond, I just found it!

I believe you to be correct;two incidents may have been confused and formulated into a single event by the few warriors who made the observation. We know there were a group of Indians on Reno's Hill who participated in the killing of Dr. De Wolf as he ascended the hill and came near to it's summit. From those heights it is very possible that the warriors observed both Benteen and the pack train approaching; Benteen's command leading out. As we now know that Benteen arrived within twenty minutes of Reno and the pack train arrived thereafter, the assumption is logical even if not verifiable.

I think this could be an example of an Indian statement being misunderstood then,later, assumed to be a lie.
