Hello all. Franco here. I'm happy to be a new member of "The Custer Files". I have a great interest in all of the "battles against the odds" so Custer's fight on the LBH naturally is of interest to me. I used to work at the U.S. Army War College and had access to files at the Military History Institute and the Army Heritage Education Center. There's a lot of good information to be reviewed there. As far as my opinions on the battle, I lean toward thinking the battle could have, maybe not been "won", but at least not been the disaster it was if Reno and Benteen had acted differently. I just got done reading Lakato Noon (a very good book) and so many indians said that the pack train was on the bluffs just when Reno got (escaped ?) there that I believe it is true. I don't think it was an hour or more behind Benteen. So I don't really believe Benteen's and Reno's claim that they couldn't move in Custer's direction for more than an hour as they waited for the pack train to come up. There is a "thread" about this topic and I have commented on that. Maybe some of you can go there and give your opinions about it. I've read about 10 books on the battle so far and am always wanting to read more. Of what I've read, I'd say my favorites are "The Custer Myth" and Lakota Noon". Is there a thread on this site where folks talk about or recommend good books on the subject? Well, I'll sign off for now. I'm happy to be a member and look forawrd to communicating with you all via this site. It looks like a fantastic place to read and learn more. Gotta go... Franco

Hi, I just found this web site and am excited about it. Lt Henry Moore Harrington is my great, great grandfather and I am looking for additional information on him because my son just graduated from BCT at Ft. Jackson, SC and is now a soldier. We had always heard the story of my great, great grandfather and how he had "survived" Custer's last stand. My father (Richard Forrest Harrington) and my grandfather (William Forrest Harrington, son of Harry B. Harrington, son of Lt. Harrington) would tell my sisters and me about him and we always wondered if the story was really true. Now not only do we have proof, but it means so much because my son, Pv2 David Forrest Bruce is now in the U.S. Army.
Thank you for any information you can provide me. I do have the book, "Custer's Lost Office" and am sending a copy to my son who is currently in AIT at Ft. Lee...ironically in C Co.
Regards, Janey Forrest Harrington Foster (previously married to Mr. Bruce)

Welcome Janey. You probably have one of the best books out there on Lt. Harrington. The author frequents this site occasionally so you may get the opportunity to question him for yourself. Although I haven't seen him about for a while. {Hey son of a cavalryman where are ya when we need ya?}
I fear my own knowledge of Lt. Harrington is woefully short at the moment, maybe one of the others here might be of assistance.
Again, welcome.
PS The last edit on Janey's post is mistaken. For some unforeseen reason when I pushed the quote button it sent me to the modify field.. go figure. Anyway there was absolutely nothing wrong with her post and I didn't correct anything.

May I also extend a warm "hello" and welcome to you. Your illustrious ancestor (as you know) was the commander of "C" company. I believe that that company, or a portion thereof, led the first charge of the battle from Calhoun Hill toward Calhoun Coulee to clear the area of encroaching warriors.
Unfortunately, the movement was countered and the men fell back in what was probably disarray.
Several warriors claimed that the "bravest man" covered this fall back allowing a portion of them to reach safety. Although his heroic actions did not alter the final climax, his courage must be acknowledged and remembered whenever and wherever men of valor are spoken of.

This is particularly for Janey:
"It has been said that he (Lt. Harrington) had a premonition before the battle and drew a sketch that he mailed to a friend that depicted himself tied to a tree surrounded by hostile Indians."
Can any forum member find any and all information to verify this thesis? I picked this up from the Custer Companion on page #199.

Just be thankful that you don't have any red sores on your butt, the Stranger is having a hard time sitting down during these last two days! I'd sorta describe it as an oversized mosquito bite, I don't know how the hell they get there. Also my mouse was broken! Maybe Cutter can work some of this into his joke material? ;D

Hi. I just stumbled on the forum and thought I'd join and see what the discussions were and the general flavor. I've been interested in the battle for the better part of 40 years, maybe more. Read a lot of the literature. Just here to see what the forum is about and participate if that seems like the right thing to do.
